Which punctures can be repaired?

Whether a tyre can be safely repaired depends on where the hole is, how big it is and how far the tyre was driven flat.

Usually repairable

  • A nail or screw hole in the tread (the central part that touches the road)
  • A single hole of no more than about 6 mm
  • A tyre driven flat only briefly, with no crushing inside

Not repairable

  • Holes, cuts or bulges in the sidewall or shoulder
  • Large tears, or several holes close together
  • A tyre driven flat for a long distance, crushed inside
  • Tread worn below the legal 1.6 mm minimum

Plug or plug-patch?

An external plug is a quick fix that can get you moving again. Because it’s fitted without seeing the inside of the tyre, internal damage can go unnoticed.

The proper permanent repair is to take the tyre off the wheel, inspect it from the inside and seal the hole with a combined plug-patch. It fills the hole and adds an airtight layer on the inner liner.

We’ll tell you which method we used on the spot, and if it’s a temporary fix, what to do next for a permanent repair.

Common questions

See all questions
How far can I drive on a plugged tyre?

A plug is there to get you moving in an emergency. Because it’s fitted without seeing inside the tyre, have it inspected from the inside and properly repaired as soon as you can.

I drove a little on the flat. Can it still be repaired?

A short, slow distance usually isn’t a problem. Driving flat for a long way crushes the inner liner and weakens the tyre, and then a repair isn’t safe. We’ll tell you once we see it.
